Contraindications
General deadlift contraindications apply — disc pathology, SI joint dysfunction. Lower risk profile than barbell deadlift due to lighter typical loading.Setup
Dumbbells on the floor beside the feet, feet hip-width. Hinge down keeping shins vertical.
Execution
- 1Hinge at the hips and bend the knees just enough to grip the dumbbells
- 2Keep the back flat and chest up throughout
- 3Drive through the floor to stand, dumbbells close to the legs
- 4Squeeze the glutes at the top
- 5Lower with control back to the floor
Key cues
- Hinge first, then bend the knees
- Dumbbells stay close to the body
- Flat back, proud chest
- Drive through the heels
- Full stand at the top, no rounding
Common faults
- Rounding the back to reach the dumbbells
- Squatting the movement rather than hinging
- Letting the dumbbells swing away from the legs
- Standing up before the back is set
- Hyperextending at lockout
Tweaks
- Elevated dumbbell deadlift for reduced ROM
- Deficit dumbbell deadlift for extra ROM
- Tempo dumbbell deadlift
