Contraindications
Avoid with any neck issues, vertigo, or uncontrolled blood pressure; practice near a wall or with a spotter.Setup
Establish a stable Crow Pose hold with knees resting on the triceps.
Execution
- 1From a stable Crow, slowly lower the head to touch the floor in front of the hands
- 2Keep the core compressed and knees tucked as the head makes contact
- 3Shift the hips up and over, stacking them above the head and hands
- 4Extend the legs upward once balance is found in the tucked headstand
- 5Reverse the sequence with control to return to Crow, then to a squat
Key cues
- Lower the head with control, don't drop it
- Keep elbows bent and tight to the body throughout
- Stack hips directly over the head before extending the legs
- Descend the same way you ascended — no collapsing
Common faults
- Dropping the head to the floor uncontrolled
- Extending the legs before the hips are properly stacked
- Flaring the elbows out, losing the compact base
- Skipping straight to full headstand without earning the Crow hold first
Tweaks
- Practice against a wall for safety while learning
- Hold the tucked headstand position before extending legs
- Use a partner or spotter during early attempts
Regressions
Muscles
Primary: Core, Shoulders, Neck Stabilizers
Secondary: Wrist Flexors, Hip Flexors
Notes
One of the most advanced transitions in the gymnastic-flow catalog — requires full command of both Crow and Headstand independently first.
