AnimalBW
A continuous side-to-side flow through the Cossack squat position, shifting weight from one deeply bent leg to the other extended straight leg, exaggerating the transition through the middle for a mobility-focused warm-up.
Demo: General Mobility Demo
Sets
3
Reps
8-10 per side
Rest
45s
Contraindications
Avoid with knee pain in deep flexion or acute groin strain.Setup
Stand with feet in a wide stance, toes turned slightly outward.
Execution
- 1Shift weight onto one leg, bending the knee and sitting the hips back and down, turning the opposite toes up
- 2Keep the heel of the bent leg flat on the ground and the straight leg's hamstring loaded
- 3Sink as low as possible while transitioning smoothly through the middle to the other side
- 4Keep the chest lifted throughout, using the hands for balance or a counterbalance if needed
- 5Continue flowing side to side for the prescribed reps
Key cues
- Sink low, don't just shift weight superficially
- Keep the heel down on the working leg
- Move with control through the middle, no momentum-driven bouncing
- Chest stays tall, don't round forward
Common faults
- Heel lifting off the ground on the working leg
- Rushing through the middle transition instead of controlling it
- Rounding the back to reach lower depth
- Using momentum instead of strength to rise back up
Tweaks
- Add a counterbalance (light kettlebell or plate) held in front
- Slow the eccentric descent for a bigger mobility stimulus
- Pause at end range on each side for 2-3 seconds
Muscles
Primary: Adductors, Quadriceps, Glutes
Secondary: Hamstrings, Core
Notes
Popular in mobility-flow circuits influenced by Prasara Yoga and general movement-culture warm-ups predating a barbell session.
