Contraindications

Setup

Hang from the bar with a supinated (underhand) grip, shoulder-width apart, full dead hang.

Execution

  1. 1Depress the shoulder blades before initiating the pull
  2. 2Focus the mind-muscle connection on the biceps contraction throughout the pull
  3. 3Drive the elbows down and in close to the torso to maximize biceps recruitment
  4. 4Lower slowly and with control to fully stretch the biceps at the bottom

  • Think biceps, not just back, on every rep
  • Elbows stay tucked close, maximizing the biceps' role
  • Slow the eccentric down deliberately for extra biceps time under tension
  • Full stretch at the bottom every rep

Common faults

  • Treating it identically to a strength-focused chin-up instead of adjusting tempo/rep range for a biceps-accessory goal
  • Rushing the eccentric, losing the biceps-specific benefit
  • Using too much back-dominant technique, reducing biceps involvement
  • Programming it identically to the primary vertical pull movement of the session instead of as a genuine accessory

  • Add a slow 3-4 second eccentric for extra biceps time under tension
  • Program for higher reps (10-15) as an accessory rather than low-rep strength sets
  • Pair as a finisher after a primary back movement
