Band substitute for the cable face pull — pulled toward the face with a high-elbow path that drives external rotation and rear-delt/rotator-cuff activation. A cornerstone shoulder-health accessory in Athlean-X programming.

Contraindications
None significant; frequently prescribed even in rehab settings.Setup
Anchor a resistance band at roughly face height. Grip both ends with an overhand or neutral grip, arms extended toward the anchor.
Execution
- 1Pull the band toward the face, leading with the elbows high
- 2Externally rotate the hands as the band approaches the face, finishing with knuckles pointing back
- 3Pause briefly with the band at eye/nose level, elbows above the shoulders
- 4Return under control to full arm extension
Key cues
- Elbows high, above shoulder height at the finish
- Pull to the face, not the chest
- Finish with an external rotation — knuckles rotate backward
- Control the return, don't let the band snap you forward
Common faults
- Pulling with a low-elbow path, turning it into a row instead of a face pull
- Skipping the external rotation finish, losing the rotator-cuff benefit
- Using a band too heavy, causing form to break down
- Shrugging the shoulders up instead of keeping them depressed
Tweaks
- Single-arm band face pull for unilateral work
- Add a pause at the face for extra time under tension
- Kneeling band face pull to remove any leg momentum
Regressions
Muscles
Primary: Rear Deltoids, Rhomboids, Middle Trapezius
Secondary: Rotator Cuff (Infraspinatus, Teres Minor), Biceps Brachii
Notes
Cable machines are excluded per equipment rules; the band version delivers the same high-elbow, externally-rotated pulling pattern and is Athlean-X's own frequently recommended substitute when no cable is available.
