Ape Sweep

AnimalBW

A variation of Ape where, instead of jumping straight forward, the feet sweep laterally around a pivot point (often one planted hand), rotating the body through a wide arc. Builds rotational hip mobility and coordination.

Sets

Reps

6-8 sweeps per direction

Rest

45s

Contraindications

Avoid with knee pain in deep flexion or acute hip issues.

Setup

Start in a deep squat with hands on the floor, as in Ape.

Execution

  1. 1Plant one hand as a pivot point on the floor
  2. 2Jump or sweep the feet around that hand in an arc
  3. 3Land softly in a deep squat facing a new direction
  4. 4Repeat the sweep continuing the rotation, or reverse direction
  5. 5Keep the head up and spine long throughout the sweep

Key cues

  • Pivot around the planted hand, don't just hop in place
  • Land soft and controlled each time
  • Keep the chest lifted through the rotation
  • Move only as fast as control allows

Common faults

  • Losing the pivot point and just repositioning both hands
  • Landing stiff-legged instead of absorbing into a squat
  • Rounding the spine during the sweep
  • Rushing the rotation before mobility supports it

Tweaks

  • Full 360-degree continuous rotation for advanced practice
  • Slow the sweep to a controlled step-around for beginners
  • Combine with Frogger for a warm-up sequence

Primary: Hip Rotators, Quadriceps, Adductors

Secondary: Shoulders, Core

Notes

A rotational extension of the base Ape pattern, used to build directional control in flow sequences.
